Movies That Matter Special

Ontdek

Movies that Matter On Tour is a series of striking films with a focus on human rights. Every monthly edition is presented with an introduction, debate or Q&A organised by their local team. This edition presents the Norwegian documentary Flophouse America. In this gripping documentary Norwegian director Monica Strømdahl offers a poignant look into the life of a family trapped in a web of poverty, addiction, and lost dreams.

After the film there is a Q&A and discussion with a special guest Jenny Buiten of Stichting Leergeld. Leergeld’s mission is to prevent the social exclusion of children from families with limited financial resources. Leergeld Utrecht offers opportunities to children aged 0 to 17 to participate in both in-school and out-of-school activities. By not excluding these children, we help prevent society from paying ‘leergeld’ later on.

Omschrijving

12-year-old Mikal was born and raised in a hotel room he shares with his parents, who struggle with addiction. Driven by love and a desire for a better life, Mikal’s greatest wish is for his mother to stop drinking. But what does it really take for someone to change? Due to the severe housing crisis in the U.S., many families are forced to live in rundown, low-cost hotels known as flophouse hotels. Director Monica Strømdahl has spent years documenting this reality, capturing the struggles and resilience of the people who consider these temporary shelters their home.
